SIP vs Step-Up SIP: Real Compounding Comparisons

Calculated at a standard 12% p.a. expected return rate with monthly frequency. Flat = fixed SIP; Stepped = 10% annual increase.

Key Insight: Over a 20-year horizon, stepping up your SIP by just 10% each year yields approximately 2× the total wealth of a traditional flat SIP.

The Mathematical Formulas Behind the Calculator

1. Lump Sum Future Value Formula

For a one-time lump sum amount L compounded for n periods at periodic rate r:

FVL = L × (1 + r)n

Where r = Annual Return Rate ÷ Periods Per Year, and n = Years × Periods Per Year.

2. Regular SIP Formula (Ordinary Annuity)

For periodic instalments of amount S invested regularly at rate r across n periods:

FVS = S × [((1 + r)n − 1) ÷ r]

Beginning-of-period (Annuity Due) compounds an extra period: FVS × (1 + r).

How Step-Up SIP Simulation Works:

Because the instalment amount changes systematically at the beginning of each investment year, closed-form formulas often oversimplify compounding mid-year. Our calculator uses a period-by-period numerical simulation engine. At every individual payment cycle, the engine calculates the exact stepped instalment, compounds accrued interest, and aggregates total capital, guaranteeing 100% mathematical fidelity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SIP planning, tax benchmarks, and wealth creation.

What is a SIP calculator and how does it work?
A SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) calculator estimates the maturity value of your periodic mutual fund investments using compound interest. It simulates compounding for every instalment at your chosen annual expected rate of return and shows total money invested, wealth gained, and final corpus. This PILOTEQ calculator uniquely supports Monthly, Every 2 Months, Quarterly, Half-Yearly, and Yearly frequencies.
What is Step-Up SIP and how does it amplify returns?
A Step-Up (or Top-Up) SIP automatically increases your contribution amount by a set percentage each year (e.g. 10% annually), aligning with annual salary hikes and income growth. Over a 20-year horizon, even a modest 10% annual step-up can nearly double your final maturity corpus compared to a flat SIP because your larger contributions arrive earlier and compound longer.
How much extra corpus can a 10% step-up create vs flat SIP?
Over 20 years at a 12% p.a. expected return, a flat ₹10,000/month SIP accumulates to approx. ₹91.99 Lakhs. With a 10% annual step-up, that same starting SIP grows to approx. ₹1.86 Crore — roughly 2× your corpus with minimal strain on your monthly budget.
What is the difference between SIP and lumpsum investment?
A lumpsum is a single upfront investment that stays invested for the entire horizon, maximizing compounding time. A SIP spreads investments over time, providing the advantage of Rupee Cost Averaging — buying more units during market dips and fewer at market highs. Many smart investors combine both: an initial lumpsum from bonuses or savings, followed by a disciplined monthly SIP.
Which SIP frequency is the most beneficial?
Monthly SIP is the gold standard for salaried professionals because it aligns with monthly payroll and offers 12 compounding cycles per year. Quarterly or Half-Yearly frequencies suit business owners and freelancers with seasonal cash flow. More frequent contributions result in smoother rupee cost averaging and marginally higher compounding.
How does PILOTEQ calculate SIP returns internally?
PILOTEQ uses the effective annual return convention: the periodic rate is derived as (1 + annual rate)1/n − 1, where n is the number of instalments per year. Each instalment is invested at the beginning of the period (annuity-due) so it earns that period's return, then the balance compounds. This matches the convention used by Groww, Zerodha Coin and Kuvera.
What expected return rate should I assume for equity mutual funds?
Historically, the Nifty 50 Index has delivered a 12% to 14% CAGR over 15+ year cycles in India. For diversified flexi-cap or large & mid-cap equity funds, 12% to 13% is a widely accepted benchmark. For conservative hybrid funds, 10% to 11% is typical, while debt funds usually generate 6.5% to 7.5%. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
Why should I factor in inflation in long-term SIP calculations?
Inflation erodes purchasing power over time. A ₹1 Crore corpus 20 years from today will not have the same purchasing power as ₹1 Crore today. At an average 6% inflation rate in India, ₹1 Crore in 20 years will be equivalent to roughly ₹31 Lakhs in today's money. Our calculator features an Inflation-Adjusted Real Value preview so you can plan your retirement realistically.
Is this SIP calculator 100% free and secure?
Yes! This calculator is completely free to use with zero registration, zero login, and zero tracking. All simulations run entirely inside your browser (client-side), ensuring absolute privacy of your financial targets.
What is Rupee Cost Averaging in mutual funds?
Rupee Cost Averaging is the built-in risk mitigater of SIPs. Because you invest a fixed sum regularly, you automatically purchase more mutual fund units when NAV prices are low and fewer units when NAV prices are high. Over time, your average purchase price per unit is lower than the market peak, eliminating the stress of trying to time the market.
